How to Wash Underwear So It Actually Lasts

Underwear rarely wears out. It gets killed — usually by heat, sometimes by softener, occasionally by being left damp in a machine overnight.

The thing that does the damage: heat

Almost every pair of underwear you own contains elastane. Elastane is a polymer, and heat breaks it down permanently. Once it goes, the band never holds again, and no amount of careful washing brings it back.

But it is only 4% of the fabric — why does it matter so much? Because that 4% does all of the recovery work. Cotton has almost no elastic memory: stretch it and it stays stretched. The elastane is spun as a core inside the yarn and acts like a spring running through the whole knit, so a tenth of the weight is responsible for the entire fit.

Think of a sock. It is mostly cotton, but when the thin elastic at the top gives up, the sock falls down. The cotton is perfectly intact and the sock is unwearable.

Care instructions are always set by the most vulnerable component, not the most abundant one. Cotton survives hot water — it shrinks, but it lives. Elastane does not: heat breaks the polymer chains and they do not reform. The 30 °C rule exists for those ten percent.

So: wash at 30 °C, on a delicate or gentle cycle, and do not tumble dry. A dryer is the single most destructive appliance in the house for anything with stretch in it.

The thing nobody expects: fabric softener

Softener works by depositing a thin waxy coating on fibres. On towels that is why they stop absorbing; on cotton underwear it is exactly the same mechanism — you are coating the fibre that you bought for its absorbency.

It also builds up on elastic over time and makes it brittle. Skip it entirely. If your water is hard and things feel stiff, a splash of white vinegar in the rinse does the softening job without the coating.

A routine that works

• Use a mesh laundry bag. It stops hooks and straps catching on everything else and stops the drum stretching things around the agitator.
• Fasten hooks before washing if a piece has them.
• Use less detergent than you think. Excess detergent does not rinse out fully and leaves residue against skin, which is a common and unrecognised cause of irritation.
• Skip bleach even on white cotton. It degrades elastane and yellows it over time. For whites, an oxygen-based brightener is fine.
• Do not iron the elastic. Ever.

Drying, which is where most people go wrong

Wringing stretches the knit permanently. Instead, lay the piece on a towel, roll the towel up and press. It removes more water than wringing and does none of the damage.

Then dry flat, or hang without stretching, out of direct sun. Sunlight is a bleach; a few afternoons will visibly fade a black or a colour.

Washing in a humid climate

If you live somewhere tropical, the rules change slightly, because nothing dries on its own schedule:

• Wash small loads more often. A big load in the rainy season means three days of damp laundry.
• Never leave washing in the machine. Mildew here takes hours, and once it is in the fabric it does not fully come out.
• Prioritise airflow over sun. A fan indoors beats a windless balcony.
• If something has been damp for a day, rewash it before wearing. Skin problems in the tropics start in laundry more often than people admit.

How often to replace

Well-treated cotton briefs last one to two years of regular rotation. A bralette usually goes first, because the band takes the most stress. The signal is not a hole — it is the band no longer returning to shape after a stretch. At that point it has stopped doing its job even if it looks fine.

Owning more pairs makes each pair last longer, because nothing goes back into the wash still damp.
